The Problem
Many people with Developmental Disabilities have a difficult time finding creative outlets, activities, and support that enrich their lives and fulfill their goals. During my time in the behavioral health field, it was a recurring issue and very difficult to navigate. This lead to depression, behavioral outburst, increases in medication, and other negative consequences.

Many individuals with developmental disabilities face challenges in finding creative outlets, activities, and support that enrich their lives and help fulfill their goals. During my time in the behavioral health field, I observed this as a recurring issue that was difficult to navigate. This often resulted in feelings of frustration, behavioral challenges, increased reliance on medication, and other negative impacts

I witnessed firsthand the magic that happens when a
person fully realizes their passion and potential.
This magic occurs when support staff with a certain level of expertise share similar interests or hobbies with the individual. Though rare, when done effectively, it leads to a dramatic improvement in a person’s quality of life. Our goal with Dream Bloom is to make this rare occurrence the new standard.

The Solution
A positive change occurred when individuals were paired with support staff who shared similar interests or hobbies and had relevant expertise. This connection fostered a sense of purpose and significantly improved their quality of life. Our goal with Dream Bloom is to make these meaningful connections the norm, creating opportunities for personal growth and fulfillment for everyone involved.

User Interviews
I interviewed 12 people with Developmental Disabilities to gather insights. I reached out to old colleagues and acquaintances to setup user interviews in the residential group homes they manage. I also interviewed 2 people I supported in the past who live independently.

To inform Dream Bloom’s design, I surveyed 32 participants, including behavioral health professionals and individuals from outside the field. The goal was to gather diverse perspectives on effective mentorship, especially when matching based on shared interests. Below are key questions that shaped the user-centered design of the app.
